Jagruti (Awakening) Seva (Help) Sanstha (Institution)
JAGRUTI program development is spearheaded by Mangala Patil, who received India's prestigious Neerja Bhanot Trust Award in 2004 for her work with women and girls. She has been at the forefront in helping married women who are abused; preventing illegal underage marriage of young girls; defusing tensions and preventing violence between the two main religious communities in the area.
JAGRUTI SEVA SANSTHA offers the second floor of their building as a hostel, home to 40 young women, many of whom have come from rural villages to the city to study and who feel secure there. They help with administrative work in addition to taking their courses. JAGRUTI also provides refuge to women escaping domestic violence. A wide range of programming takes place on the top floor, from health promotion presentations to tailoring classes and counseling.
